DoorDash Card Declined: Why and How to Fix It
When I placed an order on DoorDash the other day I got the message “Card declined!”
I had just used that particular credit card earlier that day, so it didn’t make much sense. I decided to investigate and here’s what I found…
Why was my DoorDash card declined?
When your DoorDash card payment is declined, it means your payment could not be verified. There are many reasons for this – and there are some solutions to try. However, many DoorDash customers continue to report issues with saved cards being declined, insisting that sometimes the only way to fix the problem is to create an entirely new account.
This article explores the issue of declined credit cards in the DoorDash app: what it means, why it happens, and what you can do about it.
Who is DoorDash?
DoorDash, Inc. is an American company operating an online food ordering and food delivery platform. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California and went public in December 2020.
DoorDash has a 56% market share, making it the largest food delivery company in the United States.
DoorDash food orders are paid for through the DoorDash app. Customers save payment methods in a digital “wallet” and then use those methods to pay at the end of the ordering process.
However, many customers have encountered “payment declined” notifications, which is not uncommon in food delivery services anyway. But there was frustration with the DoorDash app because so many users couldn’t get any resolution.

Why was my card payment declined?
If your card payment with DoorDash (or any card payment tool) is declined, it’s always because the payment couldn’t be verified.
Card verification is a step in the payment process that uses a combination of debit and credit card features to confirm the identity of the owner.
Card verification methods include:
- Online PIN – This is then encrypted and sent to the host (bank or processor) for authorization request. The host then verifies the PIN and returns a transaction approval response.
- Offline PIN – This is a method that is done locally between the payment card and the terminal.
- Signatures – Signatures can be collected on receipts or captured digitally at payment terminals.
- Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (CDCVM) is a type of cardholder verification supported by card networks when accepting contactless transactions from mobile devices. Cardholder verification is used to assess whether the person presenting the card is the legitimate cardholder and affects liability for fraudulent transactions. This option is how customers pay merchants like DoorDash.
The following notifications are common DoorDash messages involving payment declines:
- Your payment was unsuccessful
- Please try again later or use another payment method
- Please try a different payment method
- DoorDash payment error
- payment failed
- Please checkout with a different payment method
- payment declined
While these messages are all worded slightly differently (and they’re all very vague), they all mean the same thing: your (or your) payment couldn’t be confirmed.
The ambiguity of the message is intentional. No one wants or needs to reveal the precise details of their personal electronic transactions to merchants or anyone else. Regardless, common reasons for your card to be declined include:
- Incorrect payment information
- payment card expired
- payment card stopped
- Payment card has no funds
- This card type is not accepted
- Your DoorDash app is not working or has not been updated
- customer offline
- The card has been frozen
- Fraudulent activity detected on the card
- The DoorDash system is down
