What is a Dole Whip?
Dole Whip is a dairy-free soft frozen dessert introduced by the Dole Food Company in 1984. It was originally made in a pineapple flavor, but there are now eight flavors available.
Dole Whip became famous for Disney’s 1986 collaboration with Dole, which also brought us the legendary Dole Whip float: Dole Whip with Pineapple Juice.
Then in 1997, Kent Precision Foods took over the licensing rights and improved the “whip” texture with its own company soft serve machine. Since then, both Dole and Disney have shared Dole Whip homemade recipes for passionate fans.
Dole Whips is available in a variety of flavors, flavor combinations, and desserts, including Dole Whip Whirlpools, Floating Whirlpools, and Dessert Filled Bowls.
The original Dole Whip is diary-free and vegan, however, some newer flavor combos and dessert bowls may contain (or be garnished with) dairy and non-vegan ingredients.
For example, the Coconut Pineapple Dole Whip Swirl isn’t actually dairy-free, and many Dole Whip stores make Dole Whip snacks, mixed with soft serve, or decorated with chocolate.
Likewise, you’ll find a range of Dole Whip recipes made with custard, yogurt or ice cream.
Who does Dole Whip?
Dole Whip is manufactured by the Dole Food Company and introduced at the National Restaurant Association Show in 1984. When the Dole Food Company took over the sponsorship of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Dole Whip quickly attracted a cult following.
Disney audiences first loved Dole Whip and Dole Whip float before launching other flavors (cherry, mango, lemon, watermelon, orange, raspberry, strawberry, and lime) and combinations.
Since 2013, the original Dole Whip has maintained its gluten-free and diary-free status, made with only vegan ingredients.
Disney’s Dole Whip recipe, released in 2020, caters to both dairy and non-dairy preferences, and some fans claim it “isn’t real” as a result.
Is Dole Whip frozen yogurt?
Dole Whip isn’t technically “frozen yogurt,” although a similarly successful “whip” has been made using frozen yogurt or ice cream in imitation recipes. However, the original Dole Whip was made with pineapple juice, coconut oil, sugar and various stabilizers.
Dessert fans say that Dole Whip’s recipes are super easy to replicate and easy to “adjust” with ingredients of your own choosing.
