Meijer is unionized, and as of 2022, you are automatically joined upon entry. However, not all store members are unionized. Union dues are between $8 and $9 per wage, and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFWC) represents employees. Why are some Meijer stores unionized and others not?
The law gives Meijer employees the right to form trade unions. However, joining is not mandatory by law.

Furthermore, their co-workers or personal decisions persuaded most of the Meijer employees to unionize.

How do I opt out of the alliance at Meijer?
You can opt out of union dues at any time, no matter what agreement your union requires you to sign.
Fortunately, the UFCW provides a straightforward way to opt out by taking the following steps:
- Enter your information on the online form and submit. The website also contains instructions to follow.
- Click the link on the page that appears to open the custom form.
- Print the form. If you choose a non-print version, it will be mailed to you.
- Sign and date the form and make two copies.
- Send the completed form to the address above, preferably by registered mail.
- Give Meijer another copy to stop submitting your dues. Keep a copy of your documents.
What happens to my job if my Meijer store is unionized?
By law, Meijer cannot fire you or make changes that adversely affect your job because you joined a union.
Membership is voluntary and Meijer must accept rather than frustrate its employees.
So, if the majority of eligible team members in your store vote for a union, Meijer will be asked to bargain collectively with that union.
