Meijer’s bereavement policy includes a furlough scheme, and from 2022, employees who have worked more than three months are eligible for furlough. What is Meijer’s employee bereavement policy?
Meijer’s bereavement policy is centered on bereavement leave, which is granted to eligible employees based on their relationship to the deceased.
Eligible employees are employees who have completed 90 days of service at Meijer.
Additionally, the loss of nuclear family members received more days of paid leave than fringe family members or friends.
It is the employee’s responsibility to notify the immediate supervisor or manager responsible for such incidents.
In addition, the supervisor or manager will approve the leave as soon as possible.
If employees need extra days beyond the stipulated vacation days, supervisors can grant them, but they will not be paid.
Additionally, employees are entitled to immediate leave if they receive news of the loss of a nuclear family member while at work.
In this case, they will receive the day’s work time, which does not count as part of the bereavement leave days.
The amount paid per day for bereavement leave is the incidental daily amount.
So it’s calculated by dividing the employee’s effective hours of service by 52, dividing by five days, and multiplying by their pay rate.
It should be noted that bereavement leave does not count as working time for overtime compensation.
Does Meijer offer bereavement leave for its employees?
As mentioned, Meijer does offer bereavement leave to its eligible employees. Leave allows employees to be absent from work at the following scheduled times:
- Meijer employees receive three days of paid leave for the loss of a nuclear family member. In this case, the nuclear family member is your spouse, parent or child.
- If the deceased is the employee’s brother, sister, step-parent, spouse’s parent or child, bereavement leave is two days.
- If the deceased is a grandchild, grandparent, brother or sister of the employee’s spouse, they will receive a day off.
Will Meijer offer paid time off to attend a friend’s funeral?
Meijer’s employees didn’t get paid time off to attend a friend’s funeral. However, if you have not used up your 10 days of paid annual leave, you can apply for leave.
If not applicable, you can ask your supervisor for permission to attend the funeral for free.
Will Meijer pay a pre-retirement death benefit to the surviving spouse?
If a Meijer employee dies before receiving the pension, the surviving spouse has the right to receive the pension from Meijer on their behalf.
All you need to do is meet any of the following requirements:
- At least ten years of vested service at Meijer.
- Working for Meijer after retirement age
- At least 5 vested years
In addition, the surviving spouse will receive 50% of your benefits and 50% of the surviving annuity.
To qualify for a 100% survivor’s annuity, the deceased must be employed by Meijer at the time of death and have reached early retirement age.
Does Meijer provide any death benefit?
Unfortunately, Meijer does not currently offer any death benefit. However, if the employee dies, the beneficiary is eligible for scholarships and pensions.
However, children of former Meijer employees can benefit from scholarships, while spouses can benefit from deceased pension schemes.
Your pension beneficiary can receive a one-time death benefit unless you started receiving pensions after 2002.
Does Meijer provide a one-time death benefit?
Meijer can provide a one-time death benefit to the surviving spouse if the monthly benefit is less than $5,000.
If the monthly benefit exceeds $5,000 but does not exceed $15,000, the spouse can request a one-time payment instead of receiving it monthly.
However, amounts over $15,000 cannot be paid in one lump sum.
