The Home Depot Dress Code in 2022
If your interviewer didn’t notify you when you made an appointment with them, we’d be happy to provide you with the following information:
Home Depot’s dress code includes a colorful shirt, an orange apron and pants. Pants may differ from slacks, jeans or shorts above the knee. If you have a pair of comfy shorts that unfortunately are more than 3 inches above the knee, you may have to go back and change. All are as follows:
allow | not allowed | |
shirt | Shirts, T-shirts, polos and sweatshirts | Tank top, sleeveless top or one-sleeve top |
Pants | – jeans. Any color is acceptable (no rips or tears) – casual pants – Khakis |
leggings, yoga pants |
shoe | closed toes | – |
hat/cap | Home Depot hat or from one of the suppliers (John Deere, Cub Cadet, etc.) | Hats with other brand logos or offensive language |
shorts/skirts | Shorts and skirts 3 inches above the knee (not recommended) | sports Shorts |
hair | Clean hair, dyed hair is acceptable | – |
tattoo | No offense, no need to cover up the tattoo | – |
Since Home Depot is so lax on accessories, body art, and more, everything else about your attire is entirely up to you. As long as what you wear does not pose a safety risk, you can definitely exercise as an employee!
If you’d like to learn more about Home Depot’s uniform policy (hair, piercings, tattoos…), these facts are below, read on if you find it helpful!
What is the use of the apron?
No day at Home Depot is complete unless you see an orange apron or two around the store facility. That’s because it’s the only major item that customers identify as Home Depot employees or company colleagues identify each other during their shifts.
These bright orange aprons stand out against any background, which helps customers identify employees seeking help. They also act as a protective and utility layer for workers to move because they are made of protective fabric with pockets. So staff can bring some of the items they need and prevent spills on their clothes.
It’s the only place you can wear an orange apron when you’re a Home Depot employee. The pieces don’t leave the store, not even washed. This is to prevent outsiders from showing off and messing with customers and merchandise as employees. You are also not allowed to wear an apron outside of work shifts.
Your store manager will be responsible for handing out aprons and collecting them at the end of business hours. They are responsible for retaining, sending and replacing these staples as the situation calls for. If your orange apron is soiled, torn or otherwise damaged, please go to your store manager and discuss the matter with them.
Although orange is popular and looks fun, Home Depot employees have a tradition of customizing aprons for special occasions. As long as you don’t blatantly display other brands on your Home Depot apron, you can decorate your apron with badges, pins, drawings, etc. from your company or elsewhere!
The holidays are when you start seeing staff get creative with aprons. We saw spiders and ghost pins on the staff’s apron during Halloween, and little plush elf on another person’s apron during Christmas. Not all employees have the right to put things on their aprons, but most employees on the shop floor can easily do so!
What should I wear to work at Home Depot?
Collared shirts and pants/shorts are the policy, but how do you stay stylish at work? The secret is to mix and match with the only consistent item: the orange apron!
- Color: Orange complements every other color on the color wheel, especially the color on the opposite side. So colors in the spectrum from blue, indigo to violet would be a good match.
Be sure not to use colors that are too saturated or the two colors will clash and hurt the client’s eyes. Other than that, white, black, brown and grey are neutrals that go well with everything, so these are easy options for you!
- Form: You will be wearing a shirt and pants under your apron, so keep that in mind. If you’re wearing something that’s too loose, you’ll have a hard time tucking the fabric behind the apron straps. Clothes that are too thick can also cause the same situation.
A fitted collared shirt, or at least your size, will be the best idea to allow the apron to fit comfortably on your body. Pants that help you get around quickly and easily can also help you move and work more flexibly during your shifts.
- Safety: If you’re wearing a shirt or pants with too many loops or buckles, they’re bound to grab and/or knock things over. They can also make you uncomfortable whenever you sit or lie down. Also, if your laces are too old, they can trip you up. It is best to wear modest and safe clothes at work.
These are some of the tips we have for you right now, but let us know if you have any other mix and match options!
Are there any rules against piercings, tattoos, etc.?
Home Depot is very tolerant of piercings, tattoos, and other forms of body art. As long as your accessories do not pose a danger or contain any obscene items, you are free to wear them while serving in our store.
Nonetheless, policies may vary from store to store, so we encourage you to escalate this issue to your department manager.
Does Home Depot have uniforms?
Home Depot doesn’t have a full-fledged uniform. As mentioned earlier, it features an apron that is mandatory for almost all employees.
There is only one team in the entire store called MET – the merchandising executive team with their own orange or black shirts.
What can’t you wear at Home Depot?
Home Depot allows most but not all types of clothing when employees are on a shift.
Clothing and body art containing symbols of politics, religion or personal beliefs are also not permitted. Home Depot appreciates your opinion, but the company does not consider it appropriate at work.
Clothing with other brand names or images is not allowed. This is to prevent customers from being distracted or confused by your attire.
in conclusion
Here’s everything you need to know about Home Depot’s dress code. Don’t be late for Orientation Day once you’ve gathered the appropriate attire, or you may miss other rules about work. We wish you the best of luck!
