Known for their kitchen gadgets, IKEA is one of the most popular retailers for crockery and other kitchenware! But which of their products are microwave safe? Here’s what I found!
Are IKEA plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, containers and ziplock bags safe in the microwave?
IKEA kitchen products, including food containers, bowls, glasses, plates and mugs, are microwave safe. As long as the product is made of ceramic, tempered glass, stoneware, or BPA-free plastic, it should be safe to microwave. IKEA kitchen products made of thin glass, metal and ziplock bags should be avoided in the microwave.

How do I know which IKEA products are microwave safe?
IKEA plates, bowls, mugs, glasses and Ziploc bags will display the microwave safe symbol or instructions. You can also find confirmation of microwave safety on the bottom of the product.
Also, you can look up a specific product on the IKEA website, which will tell you if it’s microwave and dishwasher safe.

Can I put IKEA kids plates and bowls in the microwave?
Yes, IKEA offers a range of sturdy plastic plates, bowls, cups and cutlery that are suitable for microwave use.
Children’s and toddler products can withstand temperatures up to 212°F/100°C. All IKEA products for children are rigorously tested to ensure they do not cause harm.
Are IKEA’s tempered glass plates and mugs safe to use in the microwave?
Yes, IKEA’s tempered glass products, such as the Oftast and Ikea 365+ mugs, are microwave safe.
Although tempered glass is physically fragile, it is designed to remain resistant to microwave heating.
Check again for the microwave symbol on the bottom of the glass, especially if it’s an old IKEA product.
Can I microwave IKEA ceramic plates, mugs and bowls?
Yes, ceramic materials such as bone china, china and stoneware are commonly used to make plates, bowls and mugs. Pure ceramic products can be used in microwave ovens because they can withstand the heat without cracking.
However, ceramic plates with metal edges or finishes are potentially dangerous for microwave use.
Since metal heats up rapidly in the microwave, it can damage dishes and utensils.
Are IKEA plastic and food containers microwave safe?
Yes, IKEA’s plastic and glass food containers are BPA-free and microwave safe.
However, IKEA recommends that the lids of glass and plastic food containers (made of polypropylene plastic and silicone) should only be heated to 100°C (212°F).
Which IKEA glass items are not microwave safe?
Glass bowls such as BLANDA bowls present a risk of overheating and cracking in the microwave.
Thin glass items such as wine or water glasses can burst and shatter due to high temperatures. Dyes used in glassware can leak harmful chemicals into your food.
Unsafe glass can contain tiny air bubbles that can expand in the microwave, causing the item to shatter. Small glass shards are difficult to remove.
Can I put IKEA’s Bamboo range in the microwave?
No, IKEA bamboo and wood dishes are very flammable and cannot be microwaved.
You can transfer hot food from ceramic or safe plastic to bamboo or wooden bowls.
Are IKEA Zip Lock Bags Microwave Safe?
No, IKEA brand zip lock bags, such as ISTAD reusable bags, cannot be used in the microwave. IKEA recommends that these ziplock bags can only withstand temperatures up to 50°C (122°F).
However, these same bags can be used for storing and freezing foods.
Do IKEA kitchen glasses, plates and bowls contain lead?
All IKEA kitchen utensils, cutlery and cutlery, including glasses, plates, mugs, bowls, are lead free. IKEA phased out the use of lead in these products in 1994.
Which IKEA products should be avoided in the microwave?
IKEA’s collapsible mugs like the FRUKOSTMAL are designed to insulate the contents inside. It’s made of quick-melt polypropylene plastic and silicone rubber, so it’s not suitable for microwave use.
