Aldi ice cream (price, flavor, best, who makes it, quality, etc.)
Ice cream was brought to America by the Quakers in the 17th century, who brought the recipe with them, and frozen treats have seemed quintessentially American since then. Supermarkets are full and fridges are packed with options.
Despite limited freezer space, Aldi offers an exciting range of different ice creams to suit every budget and diet. Let’s take a look at Aldi’s ice cream selection.
aldi ice cream
Aldi offers dozens of ice cream options under its store labels Belmont, Sundae Shoppe, Specially Selected, Earth Grown and Fit & Active. These range from cartons and pints to bars and sandwiches, with prices starting at $1.85 and going up to $4.50.
Let’s take a closer look at taste, quality, which ones are the best, and where some of these delicious dairy (or non-dairy, if you prefer) come from. continue reading!
What ice cream flavors does Aldi have?
Below you’ll find Aldi’s Everyday (meaning they’re permanently on the shelf, unlike Aldi Finds) ice cream offerings, sorted by label with sizes and prices.
This list is based on Aldi’s website and is not comprehensive; consider it a snapshot at one point in time and is intended to provide general information. Aldi may change its stock or prices at any time.
belmont
Belmont appears to be Aldi’s more “basic” ice cream brand, featuring simple ice cream in a tub, although there’s nothing basic about the flavors or options here. As you’ll see, Belmont products rival Breyers and Ben & Jerry’s pints.
I’ve listed common Belmont flavors below, with some notes where applicable.
- Butter Pecan or Cookies and Cream Ice Cream – $1.85 for 48 fl. ounce.
- Low Fat Ice Cream – Vanilla, Sea Salt & Caramel, Peach & Cream, $1.89 for 48 fl. oz; contains half the fat of regular ice cream.
- Maximum Fudge Moose Tracks with French Vanilla – $2.89 for 48 fl. oz; a slightly denser and tastier variety. seasonal.
- Mint Chocolate Chip or Chocolate Ice Cream – $1.85 for 48 fl. oz; I have to say, for less than $2 a tub of ice cream, I was amazed at how authentic and fresh the mint taste was in the mint chocolate chip.
- Strawberry or Moose Tracks Ice Cream – $1.85 for 48 fl. ounce.
- Super Premium Ice Cream Pint Assortment – Fudge, Brookie Dough, and Thank You Cherry Variety, $2.09 for 16 fl. ounce.
- These are the Ben & Jerry’s dupes people have been raving about, and when you see how they compare to name brand prices, you’ll want to buy a bunch on your next Aldi trip.
I believe that with their insane popularity, Aldi has released different flavors beyond the three listed here; I’d be very surprised if Aldi didn’t expand the line!
- Belmont Vanilla Bean or Cookie Dough Ice Cream – $1.86 for 48 fl. ounce.
Sundae Counter
The Sundae Shoppe label features specialty ice cream products outside the cardboard box. Think ice cream bars, gelato, special diet foods, and ice cream.
- Fruit Bars – Strawberry, Pina Colada or Caribbean, $2.29 for 12 fl. ounce. (4 Fruit Bars, 3 oz each); Dreamy Fruity All Natural Flavor (No Artificial Flavors or Colors).
- Fudge & Caramel Sundae Nut Cones Variety Pack – Four Vanilla Caramel and Four Vanilla Fudge, $4.29 for 36.8 fl oz. Box.
- Gelato Mixed Assortment – Caramel Cookie Shortbread, Mixed Berry, or Triple Chocolate Flavors, $3.99 for 28.5 fl. ounce. tub; the flavor of mixed berries is addictive, and these creamy, mouth-watering ice creams are a great taste of Italy in your own home.
- Aldi also offers specialty flavors outside of Aldi Finds throughout the year.
- High Protein Ice Cream Pint Assortment – Mint Chocolate Chip, Vanilla and Chocolate, $3.39 for 16 fl. ounce. Aldi has decided to compete with the likes of Halo Top, and so far, so far so good.
The line has been upgraded by Aldi Find from time to time as the company tries out new flavors in hopes of permanently expanding the range.
- Ice Cream Stick or Crunchy Stick – Strawberry and Chocolate, $2.19 for 30 fl. ounce.
- Junior Pops or Junior Pops Unsweetened – Cherry, Grape, and Orange, $2.49 for 33 fl. ounce.
- Keto Ice Cream Pint Assortment – Cookie Dough, Peanut Butter Fudge and Mint Chocolate Flavors, $3.99 for 16 fl. ounce.
As ketogenic and low-carb diets have grown in popularity, Aldi has been seen paying more and more attention to catering to these restrictions. Luckily, Aldi’s ketogenic ice cream has garnered great praise and positive feedback (which we’ll discuss further below).
- Mini Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches – $3.99 for 12 fl. ounce. (12 ct); If you have a hard time controlling portions, especially with a sweet tooth, I think these mini sandwiches are the perfect size for a dessert that feels indulgent without being overpowering.
- Neapolitan Light Ice Cream Tub – $4.19 for 128 fl. ounce. The Neapolitan is one of my personal favorites, but other than that, I love that Aldi carries these larger buckets for larger families or parties.
- Vanilla Light Ice Cream – $4.19 for 128 fl. ounce.
- Vanilla or Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwich – $1.85 for 42 fl. oz (12 ct)
- Vanilla Sundae Nut Cones – $4.29 for 36.8 fl oz. (8 carats)
Recommended
The Specially Selected line is a foodie’s dream, and it includes cheese, pasta, and yes, several different types of ice cream.
- Super Premium Vanilla Ice Cream – $3.99 for 48 oz.
- Super Premium Chocolate Ice Cream – $3.99 for 48 oz.
Miscellaneous Tab
Aldi’s other specialty diets also offer ice cream options at very low Aldi prices. Earth Grown is Aldi’s vegan/vegetarian range and the Fit & Active label caters to the low calorie/low fat shopper.
- Earth Grown Non-Dairy Almond Pint Chocolate, Mocha Fudge, and Vanilla, $2.99 for 16 fl. I could probably write an entire article about these delicious non-dairy ice creams.
Aldi also sells a range of non-dairy ice creams based on coconut milk and oat milk, labeled Earth Grown, called Aldi Finds.
- Fit & Active Low Fat Ice Cream Sticks – Fudge, Wildberry Vanilla, and Orange Vanilla, $3.79 for 21 fl. ounce. (6 ct); Contains only 90 calories per bar and is a good source of fiber!
Is Aldi ice cream cheap?
Aldi’s prices always look cheap on paper, but you might be wondering how they compare to other major retailers or grocery stores. For comparison, I’m using Walmart prices (use their own Great Value label where possible, name brand otherwise) and more upmarket Wegmans.
Let’s start with the basic 48 oz. A bucket of chocolate ice cream. Aldi’s Belmont brand is $1.48, Walmart is $1.97 and Wegman’s is $1.99.
Now, gelato is becoming more common in grocery stores; Aldi Sundae Shoppe sells for $3.99 (14 cents per ounce) for a 28.5-ounce pack, while the closest thing at Walmart is Talenti pints for $3.98 (or 14 cents per ounce). 24.9 cents an ounce).
Wegmans does sell its own brand of ice cream under the Amore label for $3.99 a pint, or 25 cents an ounce.
Specialty diet foods are notoriously expensive, so let’s see how the prices add up. Aldi’s ketogenic ice cream is $3.99 a pint; Walmart’s cheapest option is Halo Top Keto at $3.88 a pint, and Wegmans is back with a wide variety for $5.49.
Surprisingly, Walmart has a cheaper option, and it’s a brand!
Finally, let’s compare some non-dairy options by the pint. Aldi: $2.99; Walmart: So Delicious Brand, $4.47; Wegmans: $3.99.
Aldi still comes out on top, even compared to Wegmans’ store brands.
So while Aldi is beaten by Walmart in the keto ice cream category, it’s not by much, and if you only want to make one trip to the grocery store, you can rest assured that buying ice cream at Aldi won’t break the bank.
Is Aldi ice cream good quality?
Aldi ice cream is of very high quality and stands up to the name brand. Sometimes shoppers and reviewers think it’s even better than if you paid an extra two or three bucks for a big brand label.
Racheal of AldiReviewer.com gives her opinion on Ben & Jerry dupes (aka Benton Super Premium), which she finds to be as good as any major brand flavor. One Redditor described the taste of Brookie Dough as “awesome”!
Aldi’s ketogenic ice cream has been making waves since it first came out in 2020; fan acceptance has been so strong that what started as an Aldi Find apparently quickly became an everyday item.
Lisa Freedman of TheKitchn.com described the peanut butter and fudge flavors as “indulgent” without “any weird texture or aftertaste issues.”
Finally, Aldi recently released some non-dairy Earth Grown ice cream in Aldi Finds flavors, wrapping up all three flavors (raspberry cheesecake, peanut butter chocolate, and mint chocolate chip)—and I can say they’re pretty good.
I’m a fan of So Delicious coconut milk ice cream, but these are even better!
What is the best Aldi ice cream?
If you want 48 oz. A bucket of ice cream for the week, topped with Belmont Mint Chocolate Chip. It tasted like a more expensive brand without the weird faux mint flavor.
If you’re dairy intolerant, Earth Grown Aldi Finds flavor Peanut Butter & Fudge is it. I can eat dairy just fine, but this is one of my favorite ice creams!
Who Makes Aldi Ice Cream?
Many of Aldi’s products are sourced from wholesalers and large suppliers, and while it’s impossible to find out who makes all the ice cream, I can tell you who made their Earth Grown label.
These come from SmithFoods, a dairy manufacturer based in Orville, Ohio. The factory also produces yoghurt and almond milk under different (non-Aldi) labels.
Where is Belmont Ice Cream Made?
When the FDA recalled some of Aldi’s Belmont ice cream in 2014, they also revealed the actual manufacturer of the frozen confection, the House of Flavors Ice Cream Company.
Because Aldi sources from many different manufacturers under each label, I can’t say with certainty that House of Flavors makes all of Aldi’s dairy ice cream, or even that it makes all of Aldi’s Belmont label ice cream, but they do make chocolate Cookie dough flavour.
Headquartered in Ludington, Michigan, House of Flavors was founded in 1948 as Park Dairy. House of Flavors now specializes in own label ice cream, so chances are you’ve had their ice cream before – from other supermarkets with store brands!
Does Aldi sell ice cream cakes?
Aldi does not sell ice cream cakes as part of its Everyday line.
However, as part of their Aldi Finds range, the store occasionally sells items like Oreo ice cream cakes, a rare name brand offering.
While this has been in stores in the past, it’s important to note that it…
