Buying Cupcakes from Walmart (7 Things You Should Know)
Cupcakes are a neater, more compact way to eat cakes, and it’s no wonder they’re starting to replace cakes at birthdays, weddings, and other parties.
Like almost everything they sell, cupcakes at Walmart’s in-store bakery are a great deal, but the selection can be overwhelming.
Here are types and prices, customization info, reviews, and everything you need to know about Walmart cupcakes!

What type of cupcakes does Walmart sell?
Walmart sells two types of cupcakes: prepackaged cupcakes on the bakery floor and customizable cupcakes that you pre-order.
Walmart sells prepackaged cupcakes under two store labels, Freshness Guaranteed and Marketside.
Preserve cupcakes are more versatile and include a variety of frosting flavors, colors, toppings, and full-sized mini cupcakes.
Some examples include vanilla cupcakes with rainbow sprinkles and vanilla and chocolate mini cupcakes with green and blue frosting.
Marketside cupcakes are more elaborate and lean more towards a “gourmet” dessert.
Some examples of these include Mini Triple Chocolate Cupcakes, Red Velvet Cupcakes, and Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes.
Also, there’s no telling what you’ll find if you look for it in the open coolers near or directly under the main bakery counter.
It seems like every bakery has some degree of autonomy to come up with different types of cakes, cookies and cupcakes.
If you have a particularly creative bakery employee behind the counter, you might find some uniquely decorated cupcakes.
(Or at least, that’s what I noticed in my shop!)
Then there’s Walmart’s customizable cupcakes, which you can order both in-store and online. See below for all about the customizable options!
How much are cupcakes at Walmart?
Prepackaged cupcakes with the Marketside and Freshness Guaranteed labels cost between $13.28 and $2.48 at Walmart.
The number above is for a pack of 24 mini cupcakes, perfect for serving in the classroom or office.
A typical container of 12 mini cupcakes runs between $7 and $3, depending on the type.
A single Marketside cupcake costs $2.97 and comes in a variety of flavors.
While not as cheap as Walmart cookies or donuts, cupcakes are still affordable.
Even pre-ordered custom cupcakes can be priced according to different budgets.
Prices start at $4.48 for six and $13.28 for a set of 24 (these are regular-sized cupcakes, not mini cupcakes).
Walmart also offers a cupcake filling option; that adds $3 to the price.
Does Walmart sell individual cupcakes?
Walmart does sell individual cupcakes, although they tend to be “gourmet” style and more expensive per ounce than buying 6 or 12 at a time.
Some examples of individual cupcakes include Vanilla, Strawberry Stuffed Vanilla, and even a delicious looking Red Velvet.
These are individually wrapped in plastic and cost $2.97 each.
Are Walmart cupcakes baked in-store?
Seems like Walmart cupcakes are not baked in store like their cakes. Instead, they arrive frozen.
The Grocery Store Guy describes cakes as being served this way, while various other message boards mix up bakery desserts and describe them as being served frozen.
It’s a simple matter of defrosting them before putting them on the sales floor, and a great way for Walmart to keep operating costs down.
However, many baked goods keep extremely well when frozen, and I think Walmart cupcakes are no exception.
If it is directly frozen after baking and cooling, the freezing technology “suspends the quality in time”, and it is still fresh when thawed.
I’ve even refrozen and thawed Walmart cakes, cookies, and cupcakes at home and I barely notice a drop in quality.
Can you order custom cupcakes from Walmart?
Walmart also makes custom cupcakes as part of its custom cake business
While you can go and order in-store, if you don’t need anything extra or fancy, you can easily order online here.
You start by selecting the quantity — 6, 12 or 24 — and the site guides you through flavors, fillings, icings and garnishes.
An order of six cupcakes starts at $4.48 for a 12-carat. Prices start at $6.92 for a 24-carat stone. Starting at $13.28.
The only customization that adds to the total is fillers, which cost an extra $3.
Can you order 12/24 cupcakes from Walmart?
It appears that you can order cakes made from individual cupcakes that are already formed and frosted.
If you look at the comments on this page, someone left a picture of a cupcake made at Walmart (five stars from the reviewer!).
As you can see in the photo accompanying this article, your Walmart may have a ready-made cupcake that resembles a sheet.
However, that option isn’t available on their website, so you’ll have to call or go into the store to speak to an employee and place your order.
Are Walmart cupcakes good?
Reviews for Walmart cupcakes have been mixed, with some calling them “disgusting,” while others thought they were fine but said cupcakes from stores like Publix were better.
One issue seemed to be the texture of the cupcakes – too dry for some.
Others thought Walmart’s frosting was too sweet or left an odd aftertaste.
I personally eat a lot of Walmart cupcakes on this day, and while they don’t have the gourmet bakery quality – of course – I don’t find them offensive either.
In fact, they’re perfect for a graduation party or birthday event.
They’re perfect for those celebrating on a budget, at least as much as boxed mixes.
