According to FedEx, more than 30,000 of the company’s delivery vehicles will be air-conditioned by 2022. That’s equivalent to about a third of the company’s entire fleet. However, since independent contractors lease the remaining two-thirds of the trucks, it is not known how many trucks are air-conditioned. Do FedEx trucks have air conditioning?
Some FedEx trucks have air conditioning, but whether the truck has air conditioning depends on who owns it.
More than 30,000 vehicles owned by FedEx are air-conditioned, and while that’s a sizable number, it only accounts for about a third of the company’s total fleet.
In fact, nearly two-thirds of the trucks FedEx uses are leased by independent contractors.
Therefore, FedEx does not mandate air conditioning in these vehicles, so it is not known how many of these leased vehicles are equipped with air conditioning.
That being said, the rule seems to be that the hotter the climate, the more air-conditioned trucks there are.
For example, most trucks in Arizona may have air conditioning, while only a few in Vermont.
Vehicles without air conditioning may have an auxiliary fan that circulates air to the driver in the front cab.
Why don’t FedEx trucks need air conditioning?
As mentioned in the previous section, FedEx trucks (mostly express vehicles) are air-conditioned. Those that don’t may be older vehicles that are only used in rare cases.
As these vehicles age and phase out of the fleet, they will be replaced by newer cars with air conditioning.
In other words, more and more FedEx trucks will be air-conditioned over time.
However, rental trucks (mainly ground vehicles) do not need to be equipped with air conditioning. Naturally, this begs the question, “Why not?”
Well, the answer is tricky. First, there is the question of which entity is responsible for requiring private companies to provide air conditioning.
On top of that, making air conditioning rules may depend on the climate in which the truck operates.
This would result in a patchwork of rules and regulations that would be nearly impossible to oversee.
Because of these complications, FedEx has left the decision on air conditioning to independent contractors.
So while some independent contractors may prioritize air conditioning for their vehicles, others may consider it a waste.
Are FedEx Trucks Cooling?
FedEx provides refrigerated and refrigerated shipping services to the food and pharmaceutical industries.
In addition to cooling the cargo area, the service uses cold bags, coolers, and other specialized containers to refrigerate products to industry standards (between 35°F and 46°F).
With the exception of refrigerated trucks, the vast majority of FedEx trucks do not have cool areas for storing packages.
That’s because cooling the back of a truck can be expensive and largely unnecessary. After all, most packages do not contain perishable items.
