Now that curbside pickup and grocery delivery are becoming more common, many customers using these services may be wondering about the etiquette of tipping drivers.
If you use Safeway’s grocery delivery service, you may be wondering if Safeway delivery drivers require tips. If so, read on to find out what I learned!
Do you tip Safeway Delivery?
Safeway Delivery drivers and grocery pickups are prohibited from accepting or expecting tips from customers. According to Safeway, it is against their policy for any employee to accept tips. However, if a customer orders Safeway groceries through Instacart, the app automatically collects a tip.
If you want to learn more about Safeway’s Instacart tipping policy, which grocery delivery services accept tips, and more, keep reading this article for more helpful information.
Why don’t Safeway delivery drivers accept tips?
Safeway’s website does not state why its employees are not allowed to accept tips. Additionally, every Albertsons company does not accept tips.
In other words, tipping is against Safeway’s parent company policy and is mandatory for Safeway employees.
Safeway’s website also states that while they appreciate customers’ generosity, the company does not consider tipping inappropriate, which may be why they cannot accept tips.
Customers should not force Safeway delivery drivers to accept tips, as they may face serious consequences for violating company policy.
Does Safeway accept tips through Instacart?
While Safeway workers don’t accept tips directly, customers ordering through Instacart may be able to trick the system because of how the Instacart app is set up.
When customers place an order through Instacart, the app charges a little extra to tip drivers for their service.
So if a customer wishes to tip their delivery driver, they can use this app.
However, we urge customers not to insist on tipping legitimate Safeway Delivery drivers.
Which grocery delivery services accept tipping?
While Safeway Delivery cannot accept tips, there are several other companies that offer similar services and are happy to accept tips. These businesses are as follows:
Whole Foods/Amazon Shipping:
- Amazon-Whole Foods delivery drivers accept tips.
- Customers who want to tip Whole Foods employees can do so when ordering through the Amazon Flex App.
- Customers should keep in mind that while Amazon allows Whole Foods employees to accept tips, it’s unclear whether their employees can keep 100 percent of the tips.
caviar:
- The caviar delivery guy gets to keep all tips.
- Since Caviar Delivery uses bicycles, many customers are more inclined to tip their waiters, as there is a slightly higher risk of carrying food by bicycle.
- If customers don’t have cash on hand, they can tip the delivery guy up to two hours after the food arrives at home.
Uber Eats:
- Uber Eats delivery drivers keep 100% of the tip.
- Drivers cannot accept tips until the package is delivered to the customer.
Postman:
- Postmates drivers keep all of their tips, and the service doesn’t use tips to subsidize drivers’ wages.
- The app allows customers to tip drivers after an order is delivered, and doesn’t allow new orders until a tip is sent or a cancellation notice is sent.
Grubhub/Seamless:
- Tips are accepted by Grubhub delivery drivers and will not be used to reduce a driver’s wages.
- When a customer places an order, the estimated tip amount will be calculated based on the order cost to better cooperate with the driver to complete the delivery.

in conclusion
Unfortunately, Safeway Delivery drivers are not allowed to accept tips. While the Safeway FAQ page doesn’t give a specific reason for this policy, it is in place since Albertsons Companies stores are generally not allowed to accept gratuities.
