Subsidiaries disclose: We may receive commissions for links in this article.
Kroger is the largest supermarket chain in the United States thanks to subsidiaries and acquisitions over the years.

Does Kroger own Fry in 2022?
Fry’s is a division of the Kroger supermarket chain in 2022. While Kroger didn’t buy Fry’s outright, the deal was made through grocery chain Dillons. Fry’s was sold to Dillons in 1972; thus, when Dillon merged with Kroger in 1983, it automatically became part of the Kroger Group. Despite the merger, Fry’s retained its brand name.

What’s the connection between Fry’s and Kroger?
Fry’s and Kroger were linked in 1983 when Kroger merged with the grocery chain Dillons.
Under the Kroger Company, Fry’s is the dominant brand in Arizona.
To avoid overlapping brands in the states, Kroger renamed most of Smith’s food and drug centers to Frye.
Such acquisitions make Kroger the second-largest general retailer in the United States.
Why did Kroger buy Fry’s?
Kroger bought and kept a store like Fry’s for the following reasons:
Fry’s location
Fry’s has more than 120 locations in the United States. Most of them are located in Arizona, and Fry’s Food ensures Kroger’s presence in this state.
Thanks to these locations, Kroger increases its dominance in the U.S.
That’s one reason Kroger renamed much of the Smiths Food and Drug Center to Fry, Arizona, because the brand already has a strong presence among customers.
Service area
Before 2021, Fry’s also operated another business branch called Fry’s Electronics, which was closed due to the impact of the 2020 pandemic.
Fry’s launched Fry’s Electronics in 1985 using the proceeds of the Dillion acquisition. Although Fry’s Electronics is part of Fry’s Food, it is not owned by Kroger.
Fry’s income
According to statistics, the total annual revenue of Fry’s Food stores in 2021 is $963.1.
That brings Kroger’s total company sales to $137.9 billion in 2021. As such, Frye is a key part of Kroger’s revenue growth.
How many other brands does Kroger own?
Kroger has approximately 2,800 grocery retail stores in different states in the United States that are operated by the Kroger family, making it the largest supermarket chain in the United States.
In addition to Fry’s, Kroger owns the following companies:
- Ralphs
- Harris Tate
- QFC
- king spoon
- Fred Meyer
- round
- Baker’s
- less food 4
- Dillion
- city market
- home cook
- subway market
- Smith’s
With each acquisition, Kroger has expanded its dominance in the country and now operates in 35 U.S. states
Because of this, the company’s revenue comes from the sales of all its subsidiaries.
Kroger is mainly known for its supermarkets and grocery stores that offer a variety of products.
All subsidiaries of the Kroger family of companies operate the same products, making it easier to manage operations.

Can you give Frye’s stuff back to Kroger?
Fortunately, you can return your Fry’s purchases to the nearest Kroger store. Use the store locator to find your local store.
However, you need to follow Kroger’s return policy, which allows customers to return items for a refund or exchange within 30 days of purchase.
Remember, these items must be unused and in pristine condition. Additionally, you should return the item with an electronic or paper receipt for a refund.
On the other hand, if you don’t have a receipt, you’ll get a Kroger merchandise gift card for purchases over $10.
Also, according to the return policy, Kroger will not accept the item if you do not have the original packaging; therefore, it is recommended to keep the packaging.
After 30 days, Kroger reserves the right to refuse returns. Therefore, if you have purchased a return item from Fry’s, please ensure that you adhere to this deadline.
After an item is returned, it will take approximately 7 to 10 days for the returned cash to be reflected in your account.
Kroger also has restrictions on some products, such as alcohol and tobacco, infant formula, and products for women, babies and children.
So make sure you check the return policy before returning any item.
