Does Kroger own Major? (It’s not what you think)
Subsidiaries disclose: We may receive commissions for links in this article.
As one of the largest privately held grocery stores in the United States, Meijer is known for its wide variety of products, quality products and great prices.
By contrast, Kroger is the largest supermarket retailer in the U.S. and second only to Walmart among general retailers. Because of its size, you might wonder if Kroger also owns Meijer. Here’s everything you need to know!
Will Kroger own Meijer in 2022?
Kroger doesn’t own Meijer in 2022. Although they both focus on the same products and services, they are separate companies under different management. Meijer is a privately owned company, founded in 1934 by the Meijer family by Hendrik Meijer and has remained under the family. As such, the hypercentral chain has no affiliation with Kroger.

Is it owned by the Meijer family?
The regional retailer has been a family business since it was founded by Hendrik Meijer in 1934, but was acquired by Walmart in recent years.
Over the years, Meijer has grown from strength to strength with more than 240 supercenters in six US states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Currently, Meijer employs around 70,000 team members in its stores.
Meijer, credited with pioneering the modern supercenter concept in 1962, is now one of the largest privately held companies in the United States
Today, Meijer’s supercenters in different states average about 150,000 to 250,00 square feet in size and stock more than 220,000 products.
How is Meijer different from Kroger?
Now that we’ve established that Meijer and Kroger are not the same company, how are these retailers different? Here is what I found:
ownership
To date, Meijer is a family business, while Kroger is a public company and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Kroger has 2,800 grocery retail stores in different states, including:
- Ralphs
- QFC
- Harris Tate
- king spoon
- Fry’s
- Fred Meyer
- round
- Baker’s
- less food 4
- Dillion
- city market
- home cook
- subway market
- Smith’s
On the other hand, Meijer’s 240 stores are all family-owned.
shop item
Each Meijer store offers a variety of products, including locally grown produce, meat products, beer, wine and spirits selections, a health and beauty area, and a drive-thru pharmacy.
In addition, you can buy general merchandise such as toys, clothing, electronics, and seasonal items.
However, you need to know that items vary from store to store; therefore, you should check with your local store first.
Meijer stores also have their own branded products that compete with national brands; therefore, Meijer offers customers an alternative.
While Kroger is a supermarket like Meijer, it is more focused on groceries. You can buy meat, deli, dairy and frozen meals.
In addition, Kroger has pharmaceuticals, health and beauty products, pet food, supplies and toys.
When shopping at Kroger, you may not be able to get appliances or clothing.
price comparison
On average, Kroger is cheaper than Meijer; however, it depends on certain products.
Kroger’s lower prices are due to increased purchasing power, as it has more stores than Major.
As a result, Kroger can source items cheaper and pass them on to customers.
In some cases, Meijer’s meat and produce prices may be lower. So if you don’t want to go to a store like Walmart, this is a great option.
Additionally, both stores offer weekly deals on certain items; thus, customers can save money based on what they buy.
They also have coupon programs that customers can use to buy items at lower prices.
Serve
If you shop at Kroger, you can offer services like online ordering, shipping, and digital coupons. If you have any questions, you can contact the customer service team.
Meijer is also similar. You can order, receive and use coupons online.
In addition, Meijer offers curbside pickup, pharmacy health checks, and a chain of nail salons and barbershops.
Does Kroger match the price of Major?
If you want a lower product price at Kroger, you cannot use price matching.
Unfortunately, Kroger doesn’t have a price-matching policy that customers can use. Likewise, Meijer does not have a price matching policy.
So you can only get lower prices in both stores by taking advantage of services like coupons and other deals and discounts.
Can you return the Meijer stuff to Kroger?
Although the two retailers sell nearly the same items, you cannot return products purchased at the Meijer store to Kroger.
They are separate companies managed by different entities; therefore, you can only bring items back to the respective store.
If you want an exchange or refund, make sure to review the return policy before returning the product.
