For most Americans, watching gas station numbers climb is painful. Commuters and travelers alike know that counting gas bills every month is no fun.
Walmart, the world’s largest retail chain, has a history of offering special discounts at its thousands of Walmart, Sam’s Club and U.S. Murphy Partners stores to offset those costs.
But does Walmart have gas rewards? Here’s what I found!

How Does Walmart Gas Savings Work?
Instead of running a gas rewards program, where shoppers are rewarded when they buy fuel, Walmart runs discounts to save on gas.
The gas-saving discount is tied to Walmart’s newer Walmart+ subscription service.
The service is designed to compete with their biggest competitor, Amazon, and offers great perks:
- Free one- or two-day shipping
- free shipping
- prescription savings
- Mobile phone scan
- Fuel membership price
Shoppers can access the service for $12.95 per month, or save by subscribing for a year for $98.
On member fuel prices, Walmart+ offers customers 5 cents off a gallon of gas at participating Walmart, Sam’s Club and Murphy’s U.S. gas stations.
Unlike other fuel-saving programs, there’s no limit to the number of gallons you can get a discount on.
(For example, some fuel-saving programs can save up to 20 gallons per month.)
In order to get the five-cent discount at the gas station, you have to have your phone with you and be logged into the Walmart app.
Unfortunately, if you leave your phone at home, you won’t be able to take advantage of the fuel savings you get with membership.
From there, you’ll open the Walmart app, access your Walmart+ account, navigate to “Member Fuel Prices” and follow the instructions.

How do you pay for gas on the Walmart app?
While you can’t pay for gas with Walmart Pay in the Walmart app, you can use the Walmart+ fuel discount and pay at the gas station.
When you get to the gas station, open your Walmart app and access your Walmart+ subscription.
Just scroll a little bit and you’ll see Fuel Membership Prices and a Get Started button. Locations near you will pop up; select your current location.
Once you’ve set your location, you’ll receive instructions for the type of gas station you’re currently at. Select “Get pumping” to enter a QR or numeric code.
Walmart and Sam’s Club use a QR code for discounts; Murphy’s US has a numeric code.
You’ll enter or scan a code (using your camera) and you’ll be ready to pump.
Once complete, the app will charge whichever card you choose (or the only card on record) and you will receive an electronic receipt that you can access later if desired.
Again, there’s no limit to how much petrol you can get at the discounted price, and you can top up as many times a day as you want – you get a discount every time you use it.
The discount also applies to all fuel types at the station (e.g. not just regular unleaded), so if you have any problems using your code please ask an attendant for help.
Does Walmart have gas stations?
Unfortunately, Walmart doesn’t offer fuel points.
Instead, shoppers can get 5 cents off a gallon of gas when they sign up for Walmart+, a subscription service that offers free shipping and grocery delivery.
Discount applies to all participating Walmarts, Sam’s Clubs, and Murphy’s US gas stations.
Walmart+ shoppers can access their fuel savings through the Walmart app; savings never expire and discounts are available every time you fill up.
Fuel discounts offered through Walmart+ mean shoppers don’t have to spend a certain amount or use points by a certain date.
The five-cent discount is a flat rate and is valid for subscriptions.
Do Walmart Discounts Work on Gas?
Walmart currently has no discount on gas; the only way to get the five-cent discount is to be a Walmart+ member.
In previous years, when Wal-Mart was toying with its fuel discount structure, they offered special promotions where customers could save 10 cents on a gallon of gasoline.
For example, in 2012 and 2013, they ran four or two-month promotions to benefit holiday travelers.
Gift card users get 10 cents off the gallon, and Walmart credit card shoppers get 15 cents off the full price!
Where can you pay for gas with the Walmart credit card?
If subscription plans aren’t your thing, but you still want to benefit and get fuel at Walmart, you should consider the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard.
There are many benefits, but one of the best options is that shoppers get 2% cash back when they use the card at Walmart and Walmart-affiliated gas stations.
The cash back can then be applied towards gift cards, credit card bills and online purchases at Walmart.com.
