Using a food delivery service like Grubhub is attractive because customers can conveniently order food from their favorite restaurant and have it delivered to their location.
This convenience starts to crumble when the process takes longer than expected. I checked out Grubhub’s late delivery policy and here’s what I found!
Grubhub 2022 Late Delivery Policy
Grubhub has introduced a late delivery policy that provides customers with free benefits if their orders take longer than expected in 2022. With the Grubhub Guarantee, you can claim a minimum of $5 in benefits with the On Time Guarantee, which you can redeem for future orders when you place your order. When you get a bonus, you cannot ask for a refund.
To learn what you need to do when your Grubhub order is delayed, including who to contact, what to say to them, and more, read on!
Is it normal for Grubhub to be late?
In some cases, it is normal for Grubhub to be late, which affects the usual delivery process.
That said, you might expect your Grubhub order to sometimes take a few minutes longer than usual, but if it takes an hour or more, then something can go wrong.
In this case, you should contact customer service.
Why is my Grubhub order late?
As mentioned above, certain circumstances will make your Grubhub delivery take longer, including the following:
- The wait time at the restaurant is long because they are busy or understaffed, so your order takes longer to prepare
- What you order takes more time to prepare than usual because it is large or something they have to make from scratch
- Your Grubhub driver is stuck in traffic
- It may take longer than usual for a driver to pick up your order due to less work or your low tip
- You live a long way from the restaurant where you ordered, so it will take a while for the driver to find you
- Severe weather, such as heavy rain or snowstorms, makes it harder for drivers to operate
- There is a technical issue with Grubhub itself or one of the third parties involved in fulfilling the order (such as a payment processor)
- Your driver has accepted more than one delivery on the run, including yours, and they are making multiple stops
In most cases, your order may take a few minutes, and you can track your Grubhub driver to see how they move to your location.
For example, if they are still in the restaurant, you can assume a long wait. If they seem to be driving slowly, you can assume traffic is heavy.
Can you cancel your Grubhub order if you’re late?
You can cancel your Grubhub order if you’re late, but you have to cancel early before it leaves the restaurant; otherwise, it’s going to be difficult.
In some cases, when you cancel your Grubhub order, you will need to provide a reason why you want to do so.
At this point you can say it’s too late, but you can come up with something about the address that is no longer being served and you can’t update it.
This way, your cancellation request has a better chance of being accepted.
Also, if you can’t cancel through Grubhub, you can contact the restaurant and tell them to cancel.
What if your food arrives late on Grubhub?
If your food arrives late on Grubhub, you can go through the Guarantee Program and report it for a perk or contact customer support for a refund.
This way, when you go through the Grubhub Guarantee (GHG) program, you can use the On Time Delivery Guarantee to claim benefits.
Additionally, these benefits start at $5, and you can redeem them on future orders for a higher or the same amount as the benefits.
However, you can only claim benefits within 7 days of placing the order and expire within 30 days of placing the order. Also, you cannot ask for a refund when you earn a reward.
As for refunds, you can contact customer support and report your food being late. If it’s serious enough, they might give you a refund, but they might give you credit or a free meal.
Will Grubhub penalize drivers for being late?
Grubhub may penalize late drivers, but in most cases it won’t.
That said, you can’t rate Grubhub drivers, so customers have little way to communicate that a driver is late without contacting the service directly.
Therefore, when you contact Grubhub to request that your order be late, you will need to request a refund or apply for benefits under the Grubhub Guarantee Program.
