Is Face ID safe? (all you must know)
If you recently bought a new iPhone, you may want to set up Face ID. However, if you’re not tech-savvy, you might want to learn more about it beforehand. For example, is Face ID safe?
Well, I’ve been working on Face ID and everything you need to know about its safety and security, so read further to find out what I’ve found on the subject!
Is Face ID safe?
Face ID is safe in 2022. By using Face ID instead of Touch ID, your chances of getting your phone hacked go from 1 in 50,000 to 1 in a million. Additionally, Face ID uses biometric recognition, which leverages the TrueDepth camera and machine learning, so only your unique face can unlock your device.
Do you have other questions about the safety or security of Face ID, such as is Face ID safe for banking? If so, read on as I’ll answer more of the most frequently asked questions below!
Is Apple Face ID Safe for Banking?
Apple Face ID is safe for banking because everyone has a unique face and facial features, so the odds of being able to unlock your device are one in a million.
For example, Face ID uses machine learning and a TrueDepth camera with more than 30,000 invisible points to mathematically represent your face.
Additionally, Face ID will protect this data and encode it using the Secure Enclave, which is then secured by a key. Therefore, almost no one can break into your device.
So when you’re talking about using Face ID for banking, it’s much more secure than Touch ID or other security methods like just using a passcode or pattern lock.
What are the disadvantages of face recognition?
There are some downsides to using Face ID, as facial recognition is still new, and the technology can be manipulated in some cases.
Also, there are privacy concerns, as some say Face ID violates individual rights and freedoms. However, on average, it’s still better and safer.
Is face recognition more secure than fingerprint recognition?
Face ID is safer and more secure than a fingerprint, as the chance of unlocking a device with a fingerprint is about 1 in 50,000 compared to 1 in a million with Face ID.
So Face ID is more than 20 times more secure than fingerprint technology, because those 30,000 invisible sensors are making a detailed face map that is unlikely to be replicated.
How can I make my Face ID more secure?
While Face ID is fairly secure by default, there are a few things you can do to make Face ID even more secure to protect your information. This includes the following:
- Enable “Requires Attention” for Face ID via Settings to require eyes to be opened when authenticating with Face ID
- Restrict access to your information from the lock screen
- Activate Find My if your iPhone is lost or stolen
- Create a strong password for your device
- Manage apps that use Face ID
Can iPhone work without Face ID?
You can use your iPhone without Face ID. If you’re already set up and want to disable Face ID, follow these steps:
- Go to your “Settings”
- Select “Face ID & Passcode”
- enter your password
- Select the option to turn off the iPad or iPhone unlock option for Face ID
- You can also disable Face ID completely by entering your passcode and then clicking “Reset Face ID”
Can pictures unlock Face ID?
Unlike Android’s face unlock feature, Apple’s Face ID cannot be spoofed by pictures, because Apple’s Face ID technology is more advanced and cannot handle 2D or 3D pictures.
Therefore, Face ID is more secure and reliable because you can’t use a photo to unlock your device or verify your payment.
Does Face ID send data?
Face ID doesn’t send data to the network, and Face ID data isn’t sent to the cloud or anywhere else.
Plus, data is stored in the iPhone’s Secure Enclave, an area that’s encrypted and protected, so you don’t need to worry about Apple keeping it on its servers.
Can you unlock Face ID with your eyes closed?
You can’t unlock Face ID with your eyes closed because the technology scans your iris as part of the Face ID authentication process.
Can Face ID be tricked by twins?
Face ID could be fooled by Twins, Apple said at a 2017 event. However, unless they are identical twins with the same characteristics, it is still fairly difficult to crack.
However, you only have 5 chances to match your face with Face ID before you need to enter your passcode, so there’s no guarantee that the twins will match in just 5 tries.
Does Apple Face ID work with glasses?
Apple Face ID does work with glasses, and the best part is that you can add up to four different pairs of glasses by following these steps:
- Go to “Settings”
- Select “Face ID & Passcode”
- Select “Add Glasses”
- Click “Continue”
- Follow the on-screen instructions
Does Apple Face ID work with masks?
Another reason Face ID is safe and secure is that you can still access your device while wearing a mask, and it will still match your face as long as you update to iOS 15.4.
Also, if you want to enable Face ID to use your face shield, just go into Settings, then select Face ID & Passcode and toggle the Face ID & Face shield switch to turn it on.

in conclusion
Apple Face ID is safe and secure because 30,000 invisible sensors make up a detailed mathematical sketch of your face, including scanning your iris and all your facial features.
So with Face ID, your chance of getting your phone stolen is about 1 in 1,000,000, compared to 1 in 50,000 with Touch ID.
