10 reasons DoorDash sucks (but 3 reasons we keep coming back…)
DoorDash is one of the leading food delivery apps in the United States. They are responsible for feeding millions of people around the world every day.
While it’s convenient to have food delivered directly to your door from your favorite restaurant, the experience is sometimes not that great.
Whether it’s expensive bills, cold food, or lost items, many people have had a bad experience with DoorDash. Sometimes this may be better in some areas than others, but the nature of the service makes it a less than ideal experience in itself.
Read on to find out 3 reasons why DoorDash isn’t what it was supposed to be, and 3 reasons why we still keep ordering…
(Note: This is just one point of our complaint against DoorDash, intended as constructive criticism. If you absolutely love DoorDash, we get it, we’re not going to judge you. In fact, even though we’re a bit of a basher of DoorDash here, we …*cough ahem*…still ordering embarrassing quantities from them…it’s a love/hate thing)
Why DoorDash sucks
DoorDash is expensive
If you’ve gone through the process of adding a ton of items to your order and then at checkout your total is much higher than you expected, you’re not alone.
The app has a habit of not showing you the exact total until you confirm your order, and fees and tips add up quickly.
Delivery can be slow
Between the time the restaurant prepares your order, the driver picks it up, and the actual delivery, you can easily wait hours for your food.
It gets worse if you order complicated dishes from far-flung restaurants, or if you have to live with the fear of walking delivery.
food sometimes gets cold
Since delivery usually takes a long time, the food usually arrives cold to you.
It’s incredibly frustrating to get excited about some warm crispy fries only to have them cold and stale.
Just not the same.
This is usually not a problem if you order from somewhere nearby. However, getting a real hot meal through DoorDash seems almost impossible.
Maybe it’s not just a DoorDash problem, many delivery applications have encountered this problem.
However, we look forward to the day of delivery always Arrive warm. An investment in better insulated bags might pay off.
Some Dashers are unable to follow instructions
many have no shadows amazing 5 star dash. But (this is a big but…. )
If you live in an apartment with a buzzer, or your front door is in an odd location that people usually miss, you’ve probably tried adding special instructions for your driver.
Most of the time, however, drivers don’t even bother to read the special instructions, or they follow them incorrectly.
Sometimes I’ve ordered to a hotel room and asked them to just take it to the top and let them leave it in the lobby without notifying me.
It’s probably just hotel policy, I can’t fault them for that.
However, it seems common sense for most delivery drivers to let me know where they put my food via chat, which unfortunately is not the case for a few dashers.
Dash may be irresponsible
It’s not uncommon for DoorDash drivers to take multiple orders at the same time through different delivery apps, which greatly increases the time it takes to complete a delivery.
You may also sometimes notice dashboards appearing that don’t match their photos, or appear in vehicles that don’t match what you’d expect.
There are even some crazy reports that dashers will even eat your food and hope you won’t notice!
Customer service can be greatly improved
Contacting DoorDash customer service can be difficult, let alone getting decent service from them.
They reportedly treated customers like they were doing something wrong, even if DoorDash was wrong.
They’re also stingy with refunds, preferring to give credit on the app even if you no longer intend to use the service.
Customers do not tip
DoorDash also sucks from a driver’s perspective.
Salaries are notoriously low and most of their income depends on generous tips from clients. Unfortunately, customers rarely tip generously, even if they don’t tip at all.
For DoorDash drivers, spending a few extra dollars can go a long way, especially when they’re driving long distances to bring you food.
gas is expensive
It’s notoriously hard to make a decent amount of money delivering for DoorDash. Drivers often struggle to cover their own fuel costs.
This has gotten worse in recent years as inflation and natural gas prices have soared.
no guaranteed hourly wages
DoorDash claims that their drivers make an average of $23 an hour, but for many, the real wages aren’t even close to that.
With no guaranteed hourly wages, driver profitability is highly dependent on fulfilling orders as often as possible.
Another important factor (as mentioned earlier) is the prompt, which is completely out of the driver’s control. Whether or not customers tip is probably the biggest difference in Dashers’ pay.
This makes income on any given day unpredictable.
Restaurants can be slow to prepare food
This affects customers and drivers.
Some restaurants struggle to meet requests when preparing food, and drivers are often blamed for delays.
This often results in customers eating cold food and tipping drivers.
And… 3 reasons why we’re still coming back to DoorDash
so convenient
It’s hard to argue with convenience. Getting food delivered directly to your front door from your favorite restaurant is just 21st century luxury.
This is the main reason why I hardly ever go out. I mean…I don’t need it at all.
Between DoorDash, Amazon and InstaCart – I’m ready!
This is probably why DoorDash got rid of all the things listed above; their service is very simple and satisfying.
easy money
Although some drivers have struggled, DoorDash is still a great way to make money in your spare time.
Some drivers report that DoorDash makes over $200 a day! That’s a decent amount of pocket money.
It might be more profitable if you live in a city and can deliver by bike without having to buy gas.
This is a quick and easy way to earn a part-time (or even full-time) income for many!
DashPass brings you many benefits
If you’re willing to pay for the perks, a DashPass membership is well worth it.
Although membership requires a monthly fee, it lets you skip shipping fees and get exclusive benefits. If you regularly order from DoorDash, getting a subscription is definitely a breeze.

Final thoughts..
I’m pretty frustrated and think DoorDash sucks at times, but honestly, the convenience and ability to earn extra money anytime is a huge benefit.
It’s easy to see the negatives (cold food and slow delivery), but ordering a pina colada from the tub just makes all the bad things go away.
