Targeted scams in 2022
Target has been known to run some scams against its customers in 2022. One way criminals can approach people is by contacting them via email or text with a link to an external site where they can access sensitive information about your account without permission. Other scams use tactics such as coupons and gift cards to obtain shopper information.
Check out our full list of the most common scams and keep an eye out for them when shopping at Target!
1. Phishing
Phishing is a common scam where someone sends an email or text message that appears to be from Target but is actually from a fraudster.
Most of the time, these messages try to make you click a link or open an attachment that will install malware on your device.
So be very careful about any emails or text messages you receive claiming to be from Target – if in doubt, don’t click anything and forward the message to phishing@target.com.
2. Fishing
Vishing is another email and text message scam, but the fraudster will try to get you to call a phone number instead of clicking a malicious link.
They may say there is suspicious activity on your Target account or that your order cannot be processed.
3. Trick or Treat
Smishing is similar to phishing, but instead of using email or text messages, fraudsters use SMS (a short message service).
Additionally, they may send you a text message that there is suspicious activity on your account or that your order cannot be processed.
As with phishing and phishing, don’t reply to messages or click links. Instead, forward it to phishing@target.com.
4. Fake Target Coupons
Currently, there are many fake coupons circulating online at Target stores. These may be free items or huge discounts, but they are not real.
Don’t be fooled – only use coupons direct from Target.
5. Gift card scams
In this scam, a fraudster will contact you claiming to be from Target Customer Service.
They will say there was a problem with your recent purchase and offer to refund the amount to the Target gift card.
Next, they’ll ask for the 16-digit code on the back of the card – once they have this, they can spend!
So if you get a call like this, hang up and call Target Customer Service at 1-800-440-0680 to check if it’s legitimate.
6. Return Fraud
Some fraudsters will try to return items stolen from Target stores using fake or stolen IDs. They will then ask for a refund in cash or a prepaid debit card.
If you are not sure whether to return the item, please contact your manager or call Target Customer Service at 1-800-440-0680.
7. Target Investigates Fraud
Some shoppers may receive an email or text saying they won a $500 Target gift card in a survey.
To claim your prize, you will be asked to click a link or call a phone number; this is a scam – don’t click a link or call a phone number.
Additionally, Target will never contact you about surveys that you could win a prize.
8. Collection scams
In this scam, someone will call or email you claiming you are from Target Collections and saying you owe money on unpaid bills or outstanding debts.
Often they threaten legal action if you don’t pay right away; it’s a scam – hang up or delete the email and don’t reply.
Remember, Target will never contact you about outstanding debts this way. If you are not sure, please call Target Credit Card Service at 1-800-669-6550.
What should target shoppers do to avoid being scammed?
If you receive a suspicious email, text message or phone call purporting to be from Target, please forward it to phishing@target.com and delete it.
Also, never click on any email or text link, and never call an unrecognized phone number.
Finally, shoppers can report any scams against targeted customers to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online or by calling 1-877-382-4357.
How do I add 2-factor authentication to my target account?
Two-factor verification is an extra layer of security that can be added to your Target account.
When you try to log in, you will be asked to enter a code sent to your phone.
So even if they have your username and password, it will be very difficult for fraudsters to gain access to your account.
With that in hand, to add two-factor authentication to your Target account, follow these steps:
1) Login and go to “My Account”
2) Select “Edit Profile”
3) Under Two-Factor Authentication, select Edit
4) Follow the on-screen instructions
Additionally, if you have any questions or concerns about two-factor authentication, please contact Target Customer Service at 1-800-440-0680.
