Does Planet Fitness offer free pizza?
A gym that hands out pizza? ! Am I reading that right? ! While it may seem backwards, it does seem that there are rumors that Planet Fitness will be giving away free pizza.
Really? We looked into it and here’s what we found…
Does Planet Fitness offer free pizza?
Yes, you heard that right; Planet Fitness gyms give away pizza almost every first Monday of the month, and on the Tuesday after the first Monday of every month, they give away bagels.
According to Business Insider, this seemingly absurd explanation for the Planet Fitness chain’s rapid expansion actually makes sense; and, hey, they even have good reasons for doing so:
Brian Zehetner, director of health and fitness at Planet Fitness, insists that it’s reasonable and okay for individuals to eat a slice of pizza in moderation once in a while.
As a community committed to not judging others, Planet Fitness firmly supports the idea that it’s good to occasionally reward yourself as you work towards your health and fitness goals.
But giving away free pizza is nothing new: It all started in 1998, when the water heater at the club’s fourth location in Concord, New Hampshire, failed.
Planet Fitness staff ordered pizza for each member as a token of appreciation for their understanding while they repaired the heating system.
It goes so well that they make it a monthly tradition at their institution. Every year, each club now serves the equivalent of 5,500 slices of the dish.
Why does Planet Fitness offer free pizza?
Planet Fitness’s free pizza is a marketing ploy (and a successful one!) that gets people in the door and further promotes their “no judgement” policy. It’s also a great way to show beginners that you can still enjoy yourself while pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
Free pizza and bagels make it harder for fitness fanatics to keep exercising, as does Planet Fitness’s “bulky alert.” Imagine when you walk into a gym, it might smell like cheesy, playful heaven.
While it may work against your weight loss goals, many people find it easier to exercise in an intimate atmosphere where food and drink are provided.
The idea that free pizza is meant to encourage a “#treatyoself” attitude while exercising is also a plausible explanation. Does eating pizza after a bike class, strength training, or long run take away all the hard work?
The jury is still out!
While it’s true that burning more calories than you take in can lead to weight loss, that doesn’t mean your health is as simple as subtraction and addition. Eating pizza after a tough weight training session won’t undo all your hard work. Especially if it’s monthly.
The same goes for other forms of exercise, such as building endurance during a running or aerobics class or gaining flexibility during a yoga class.
If you want to eat something after a workout, it won’t be as good for you as a sports drink or other clean, nutritious food.
However, just because you’re eating more calories watching Friends than you’re burning on the treadmill doesn’t mean you’re not getting any hard work done. Likewise, workouts cannot be undone.
“When you’re working hard, it makes sense to treat yourself occasionally, even if it involves post-workout pizza,” says Sarah Berndt, nutrition consultant for Complete Nutrition. “If you eat pizza once in a while, even if it Not the healthiest recovery fuel, and a tasty slice will add extra calories, but eating pizza won’t undo all your work and effort.
In fact, it can help you feel happier and let go of the resentment and anger you have for continuing to feel deprived. “
Health, she explains, depends on seeing the “big picture” and achieving balance. By maintaining an active lifestyle and eating your favorite foods in moderation, you can boost motivation and promote health and well-being. (However, this does not affect the fact that nutrition is a major determinant of weight loss.)
Planet Fitness may offer free pizza if it helps foster community and build motivation among its members to exercise. In fact, nothing brings hearts together like a free meal.

What time does Planet Fitness’s free pizza serve?
It’s okay if you’re not good at planking. This is especially true of Planet Fitness, which calls itself a “judgment-free zone.” For those who have never set foot in a gym, however, the idea of a judgment-free zone is an illusion, which makes events like Planet Fitness’s workout parties all the more important in the first place.
Planet Fitness is giving away free pizza across the country on the first Monday of every month from 4pm to 7pm (local time). Anyone over the age of 18 can grab some bagels from 7am to 10am or pizza from 4pm to 7pm and never come back or become a member.
It’s not the first time Planet Fitness has offered free snacks to fitness center patrons. The company’s philanthropic history dates back to 1999, when a club in New Hampshire bought pizza during a day-long water emergency.
If fitness isn’t on your agenda, Planet Fitness can help you have those fleeting moments of gratitude and joy by serving up free pizza and bagels.
