What are SSNs?
A Social Security Number (SSN) is a numerical identifier assigned to every U.S. citizen and other resident to track income and determine benefits.
These numbers were created in 1936 as part of the New Deal to provide retirement and disability benefits.
While the original intent of SSNs was to track income and provide benefits, these numbers are now used for other (and much more complex) purposes, such as identifying individuals for tax purposes, tracking credit reports, and verifying online identities.
Individuals in the United States need to provide their SSN to obtain credit, open bank accounts, receive government benefits, make major purchases, and access digital money transfer systems.
