What does Amazon think about gift cards?
Amazon’s terms and conditions for gift card expiration are as follows:
The portion of your Amazon.com balance consisting of gift cards issued after October 1, 2005 does not expire and may be applied to your Amazon.com account and applicable to eligible purchases notwithstanding any stated expiration date. The expiration date also does not apply to the portion of the Amazon.com balance consisting of any gift card issued before October 1, 2005 in CA, CT, LA, ME, MD, MA, MT, NH, ND, OK, RI, VT, WA or any other jurisdiction, only to the extent prohibited or restricted by law. All other Gift Cards issued prior to October 1, 2005 and the portion of the Amazon.com balance comprising those Gift Cards will expire in accordance with their stated terms.
Based on this, we know that Amazon gift cards don’t expire since 2005.
So yes, if you find a gift card that someone gave you for Christmas 2005, it’s still redeemable!
How to Redeem an Amazon Gift Card
Redeeming an Amazon gift card is fairly straightforward.
You can redeem it on your desktop or through the Amazon app on your mobile device.
To redeem follow these simple steps:
- Visit the Amazon website or open the Amazon app on your phone.
- Make sure you’re signed in and click “Account” under “Hello” on the right.
- Scroll down and click “Your Payments”
- Here you will see all your saved credit card files.Click “Redeem Gift Card” and enter card information

You can now use your gift card balance as a payment method at checkout.
Do Amazon gift cards expire if not redeemed?
No, the balance will not expire even if you forget to redeem your Amazon gift card. You can redeem your Amazon gift card at any time.
So if you receive an Amazon card and lose it for three years, when you find and claim it, the balance will still be on the card.
However, it’s best to activate your gift card right away and add the balance to your account. This will help avoid any problems, such as misplaced cards.

If you don’t want to touch your gift card balance, you can choose to use a different payment method on Amazon. Make sure to delete it as “Preferred Payment Method”.
The Amazon Gift Card balance will remain in your account until depleted.
