What oat milk does Starbucks use? (Everything is known!)

Vegan and dairy-free options are on the rise everywhere, so of course Starbucks has started offering alternatives for anyone who doesn’t like milk.

There are plenty of options, from almond extract to rice and oat milk. But not all non-dairy milks are the same. Which makes us wonder, what oat milk does Starbucks use in their artisanal beverages?

What oat milk does Starbucks use?

Since March 2021, Starbucks has been using Oatly oat milk to create a range of non-dairy alternatives for its customers nationwide. They exclusively use the Oatly Barista Edition, which can be found in most markets like Target and Walmart.

This article covers oat milk: what it is, why we drink it, and why Starbucks introduced it to their signature line of handcrafted drinks.

    What is oat milk?

Oat milk is a vegetable milk first produced in Sweden in the 1990s, made by milling oat grains in water and heat treating the resulting slurry to produce an oat-based liquid.

This liquid is then separated and refined, and other ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, sweeteners, flavors, salt and oils are added to the final product.

Is oat milk good for you?

Oat milk is high in protein, fiber, and other nutrients, but low in fat. Fortified versions can be fortified with B vitamins, vitamin D, calcium and other nutrients. These factors all mean that oat milk is good for your health.

However, sweetened or flavored oat milk may not have as many health benefits.

The protagonist of oat milk is actually on the stage of environmental protection. Compared to conventional milk, oat milk uses fewer environmental resources, produces no methane and almost no carbon dioxide during production. Manufacturing also uses less water.

Why did Starbucks introduce Oatly oat milk?

Starbucks has publicly announced its ongoing commitment to sustainability. They see consumers as powerful agents in the “Plant Revolution” and therefore invited Oatly to join the partnership and reduce their carbon footprint.

Starbucks launched Oatly oat milk as part of its non-dairy line of espresso, lattes and iced beverages.

    What is oatmeal oat milk?

Oatly has been around for over 30 years, but only gained global attention through its partnership with Starbucks.

Their oat milk is used exactly the same way we use milk: drink, mix and cook.

Oatly claims their oat milk is delicious, creamy, healthy, and produced in a way that causes the least harm to the environment.

Their Barista version of oat milk is slightly higher in fat and contains an acidifying ingredient that prevents the milk from curdling at high temperatures.

Is Starbucks Oat Milk Gluten Free?

Oatly oat milk products are certified gluten-free, so if your diet requires you to avoid gluten products, oat milk is fine for you.

However, not all oat milk is gluten-free, and it’s best to check the product specifications yourself to determine its suitability.

    Is Starbucks Oat Milk Sweetened?

Starbucks uses Oatly oat milk to make many of their plant-based drinks, and Oatly doesn’t add sugar to their regular oat drinks.

However, most Starbucks indulgent beverages definitely contain sugar, which is added independently of the oat milk, for example, the iced chocolate almond milkshake espresso.
