How does cash delivery work?
When a customer places a “cash on delivery” order, the app (UberEats, grubhub, etc.) notifies all available drivers, and one of the drivers picks up the order from the restaurant for delivery.
Delivery drivers are advised to keep the exact change in order value to deliver the order and pay in cash. If the customer doesn’t accept the delivery, the driver can usually decline the cash on delivery order and return the food to the restaurant, but this varies by app.
All money a delivery driver earns by delivering cash on delivery orders will be deducted from the next scheduled deposit. The food delivery app will not deduct any tips customers give to drivers, only the original amount of the order.
What if I don’t have enough change for a cash on delivery order?
Keep in touch with customers via the built-in chat service and tell them to have the exact amount ready because you don’t have change. If a customer tells you they don’t have change, tell them you can’t deliver the order because you’re short of change.
Call a delivery driver support representative and share the entire situation with them to return the order. When you return the order to the restaurant staff at the front desk and share the order ID with them, the restaurant will refund half the order price.
What if cash on delivery customers insist they pay online?
This doesn’t happen often, but sometimes customers want to trick delivery drivers by putting cash on their delivery slips. Still, when the drivers arrived at the designated location to deliver the order, they said they paid for the order online. These in-app payment systems are the best on the market, which can’t happen.
You should contact in-app customer service and return the food to the relevant restaurant for a reimbursement amount, which varies by order.
For cash on delivery orders, you shouldn’t offer food to customers without paying first, because customers can open the food and the restaurant won’t accept it in that case.
