Amazon is one of the fastest-growing employers in North America. They are hiring in late 2020 on a hiring spree and are on track to become one of the largest private employers in the United States.
Because of this, Amazon often requires potential employees to undergo drug testing and background checks before continuing the hiring process. If you fail this test, you are a regular user of some illegal drugs, usually marijuana. Amazon won’t hire you if you fail a simple drug test. So how do you know if you failed an Amazon drug test?
How do you know if you have failed an Amazon drug test?
If you fail Amazon’s drug test, they’ll usually send you an email within a few days explaining why you failed. They also usually give you the option to retake the test, but Amazon won’t hire an employee who fails a drug test.
It’s not uncommon for your job to be rejected during Amazon’s hiring process, but will Amazon tell you why? It depends on your progress in the recruiting process, but usually, Amazon will notify you via email or in person.
Failing a drug test will definitely waste your chances of getting a job, so it’s a good idea to keep yourself clean before and during your job. Especially if you expect to do dangerous work like a forklift operator, staying awake is usually a good idea.
Will Amazon Re-Hire After Failed Drug Tests?
Failing a drug test isn’t the end of the world. If you fail a drug test, the hiring manager will usually allow you to retest. If you test positive for the same substance again, you will be disqualified.
The reason they do this is because some test results are false positives. Once you fail the second test, your failed test will remain in their system for 120 days. After this period, you can reapply to try again.
As for those who fail a drug test while on the job, the answer depends on the situation. If you have an accident while working, it is likely that you will not be considered for rehiring.
However, if you are fired for testing positive for marijuana, you may be able to reapply as their policy has changed (more on that below). If you are fired for using another prohibited substance, you can reapply within 120 days of the failed test leaving their system.
Does Amazon do random drug testing?
Sometimes people stay clean temporarily to pass a pre-employment drug test, and then resume illicit drug use after being hired. Because this can create safety concerns, employers sometimes require random drug testing of their employees to ensure compliance with drug policies.
Reports from former and current employees vary, but Amazon appears to be fairly inconsistent in conducting random drug testing. Some regions have them more often, while others don’t have them at all.
If you are concerned, you can ask your regional manager about your manager’s specific policies. If they can’t help you, then you need to get in touch with HR to have the agent clarify their policy. Most fulfillment center positions will be randomly tested for prohibited substances on a monthly or quarterly basis.
What is Amazon’s drug testing process?
While some policy details vary by region, all of Amazon’s drug testing policies have a few things in common:
- After background checks, drug testing is performed during the pre-hiring process.
- There is no drug test on the first day of work or on orientation. Drug testing happens before you are hired.
- The testing process uses a buccal swab rather than a hair follicle or blood sample test. Swab tests are not very good at detecting certain substances, such as marijuana.
- If you are involved in an accident at work, or if you are suspected of using a prohibited substance at work, you will be tested again. These tests may include hair follicle tests or blood samples.
- Random drug testing is usually only done on randomly selected employees, so there’s a chance you’ll never get tested.
- The drugs being tested include common recreational drugs such as opiates, cocaine and benzodiazepines.
Will Amazon test employees for marijuana use?
Although Amazon is known for being strict in this regard, they have recently loosened their drug policy due to certain political developments. In June, Amazon announced that they would no longer be employees of cannabis drug testing. Amazon decided to do this for several reasons:
- First, a growing number of states in the United States are beginning to legalize or decriminalize marijuana use. Because this inconsistency makes it difficult to develop inclusive company policies, Amazon has decided to simply eliminate cannabis testing.
- Second, statistics show that people of color are disproportionately affected by marijuana testing, and therefore their job opportunities. In an effort to be more inclusive of these communities, Amazon has decided to no longer disqualify potential employees based on marijuana testing.
- Amazon has also pledged to support the promotion of pro-cannabis legislation, such as the Cannabis Opportunity Reinvestment and Elimination Act (MORE Act) of 2021. This is a federal bill that would legalize marijuana and expunge the records of people convicted of marijuana-related crimes.
So if you were previously disqualified from working at Amazon for failing a marijuana drug test, you are now eligible to reapply. There are some caveats, though; if you are responsible for a workplace accident, you will still be tested for all drugs, including marijuana.
Testing positive for other drugs remains contraindicated. Some positions, such as delivery drivers, are still being tested for marijuana use because their employment is regulated by transit authorities.
